the COMING TO OUR SENSES retreat

May 16-23, 2026 | Arles, France

Slow down.
Pay attention.
Everything is connected.

A retreat for deep listening, mindful reconnection, and creative renewal

The Heart of Our Gathering

In the flowering warmth of May, Coming to Our Senses invites you to step out of noise and into resonance. This intimate retreat in Provence is a sensorial journey back to the natural world—and back to yourself.

Experience the magic of dawn birdsong with interspecies musician David Rothenberg, author of Why Birds Sing. Visit a glorious bird sanctuary in the Camargue and its languorous beaches of Ste. Marie de la Mer. Listen to the secret sounds of ponds and the primeval rhythm of cicadas. Learn to use all your senses to write about place, and to listen with the ear of the heart. Discover what made Arles a muse to Van Gogh and others, and why it still inspires creatives around the world.

For eight days, we gather as travelers and seekers to attune to the wisdom of birdsong, water, place, and the body’s quiet knowing. Through guided soundwalks, generative writing, and embodied practices, we remember what it means to use all our senses to reconnect with the natural world.

This is not a retreat of escape.
It’s a retreat of return.

“The world is full of music, and all we have to do is stop and listen.”

— David Rothenberg, Grammy-award winning
musician, author, and philosopher

THE EXPERIENCE

The Music of the World

David Rothenberg, musician, philosopher, writer of many books on music in the natural world, from birds to whales to bugs to ponds, will take residents out to be part of his latest project: listening to birds singing at dawn. There is a dawn chorus of birdsong all over the world, and surprisingly, scientists have never been able to figure out why.

Through careful listening, reflecting, and paying attention, perhaps we can be the ones to figure it out.

We wake up early in the morning, an hour before the sun comes up, and hear the spring dawn chorus outside Arles when it will be at its finest. Chaffinches, chiff chaffs, song thrushes, orioles, wrens and linnets will offer up their finest tunes. Later in the week we will visit the Pont de Gau bird park full of flamingos and reed warblers. We’ll develop a practice of ‘deep listening’ inspired by the great Pauline Oliveros, with whom Rothenberg worked for many years.

Writing Our Senses

Following on from David’s excursions into bird language and our lived experiences of Arles, Rosalind Brackenbury will lead sessions on the language of sound, sight, smell, taste and physical presence in a new and stimulating place, encouraging participants to write from the body, expressing the experience of sound as well as our other senses.

This is not just for those who already know themselves to be writers, but rather a way for everyone to capture immediate experience in words, whether poetry or prose, in an intimate and personal way.

Listening through Our Bodies

Just as David invites us to listen outwardly to birdsong and the music of place, Nadine Pinede guides us to listen inwardly, to the quiet rhythms of our own bodies and to the healing presence of nature. Drawing on her background as a poet and teacher of mindful self-compassion, she leads sessions where writing and somatic practice meet.

We will explore how our bodies carry memory and resilience, much like the layered landscapes of Provence, and how artists such as Vincent van Gogh turned to the natural world as companion and witness. Through reflective writing and gentle embodied exercises, participants will learn to rewild their senses, carry ancestral wisdom forward, and cultivate inner compassion and delight.

Together with David’s deep listening walks and Rosalind’s writing explorations of place, Nadine’s sessions weave the inner landscape with the outer, helping us reconnect with resilience, creativity, and the healing music of the world around us.

WHY ARLES?
To gather in Arles is to step onto ancient pilgrim ground, where centuries of seekers have set out in search of renewal. Here, under the same light that once guided Van Gogh’s brush and drew travelers to the banks of the Rhône, we begin again, listening and remembering what it means to be fully alive. Arles is not only a place on the map, but a threshold, a doorway into deeper presence, where our retreat becomes a sacred journey of return to ourselves and to the living world.

WHO IS THIS RETREAT FOR?
This retreat is for those who feel called to listen more deeply to the music of the world and to their own quiet knowing. It is for anyone who has ever wondered why birds sing together at dawn, and for those who long to slow down and return to the ancient rhythms of the natural world.

Writers, musicians, artists, seekers, educators, and curious travelers are all welcome. You do not need to be a writer or musician, only willing to listen, look attentively, and arrive as you are.

Participation is limited to twelve guests to preserve intimacy and spaciousness.
